What is PBS
Positive behaviour support (PBS) is a framework for developing an understanding of an individual’s additional support needs (challenging behaviour/behaviours of concern). To use this understanding, we develop effective PBS combining the technology of behavioural intervention with the values of human rights. These value based approaches empower the individual to lead a fulfilling life. PBS aims to enhance quality of life as both an intervention and outcome for people who display behaviour that challenges and for those who support them. PBS interventions are also constructional in increasing the person’s social competence and independent living skills. In contrast, the use of aversive or punitive interventions (punishment) is rejected on the basis of their incompatibility with a values-led approach. Glenelg has it’s own PBS department consisting of a Quality and Development Manager, PBS Manager and a PBS Co-ordinator.
Theory and Evidence
PBS is founded upon an understanding that behaviours that challenge serve important functions for those who display them. They develop and are maintained within the context of a person’s abilities, needs (including their physical and mental health) and circumstances and critically, the characteristics of the social and physical environment within which the behaviour occurs. This understanding, together with many of the assessment and intervention methods utilised in PBS is grounded in constructional principles and procedures from behaviour analysis. PBS is also an inclusive approach which incorporates additional evidence-based approaches. These are supportive of its stated values and compatible with its overarching framework.
Transitions
Transition is the movement of a supported individual from activity to activity, place to place or from individual worker to individual worker. As a supported living provider special consideration needs to be given to any change/introduction to supported living services. Glenelg Support provides a robust transition process when supporting individuals to move into our supported living services. We work in partnership with other providers who may be involved in the process of ensuring a smooth transition for the supported individual.
The Quality & Development Manager will be the transitional lead. They work alongside our PBS Manager and Co-ordinator for every individual we intend to provide a support service for. The PBS Manager will ensure a ‘planned transitions’ document is completed. This covers all stages of the transition. This also ensures all relevant assessments are completed prior to the individual being offered a service.
Transition from Home/ Children’s services to Adult Supported Living can be particularly difficult for people with autism. Glenelg support will work closely with families & external services and the transition teams to:
- Maintain consistent staffing over the transition period and support them to work across different settings and services
- Fully involve the individual and their families in multi-agency transition planning
- Open transparent communication between all parties
We work in partnership with our sister company, Essandore Care. This helps to transition children from their residential children service to adult supported living.
